Nicos Labropoulos, PhD is 2012 AVF Program Chair

Nicos Labropoulos, PhD, our Director of Research and Medical Education, has been named 2012 Program Chair of American Venous Forum (AVF), a leading medical organization dedicated to improving the care of patients with venous and lymphatic disease

Founded in 1988, AVF fosters cutting edge research and clinical innovation and educates health care professionals, patients and policy makers about venous and lymphatic diseases. AVF's leadership and membership are recognized internationally as thought leaders, expert investigators and clinicians in venous and lymphatic disease.

Dr. Labropoulos will I will attend the 24th Annual Meeting of the Forum in Orlando, Fla. Feb. 8-11, where he will chair two sessions, present an honorary award to Professor Andrew Nicolaides, MS, FRCS, FRCSE, PhD (Hon), and give a workshop on venous ultrasound.

Center at the ACP 25th Annual Congress

CVR at the ACP 25th Annual Congress

In the five months since its creation, the research department of Center for Vein Restoration has produced several papers contributing to the scientific community, including being published in the journal Phlebology (Royal Society of Medicine Press) and the Journal of Vascular Surgery. In November, we were proud to be selected to present the abstract "Vein Diameter and Venous Insufficiency in the Mid-Thigh Great Saphenous Vein: A Retrospective Cohort Analysis" at the American College of Phlebology (ACP) 25th Annual Congress in Los Angeles.

It was heart-warming to see that Center for Vein Restoration remains at the cutting edge of technology use as well as in its use of protocols and practice guidelines.

Nicos Labropoulos, PhD, DIC, RVT Joins Our Team

Dr Nicos Labropoulos

We are proud to announce that Nicos Labropoulos, PhD, DIC, RVT, one of the foremost experts in vascular medicine, has joined Center for Vein Restoration as our new Director of Research and Medical Education.

Dr. Labropoulos' name is well known in vascular medicine circles. He is Professor of Surgery and Director of the Non-Invasive Vascular Laboratory, Department of Surgery at the Stony Brook University Medical Center in Stony Brook, New York. His clinical interests and areas of expertise include non-invasive vascular imaging; ultrasound-guided vascular procedures, pathophysiology and diagnosis of venous thromboembolism, chronic venous disease and diagnosis and prevention of atherosclerosis.

He has served on the editorial boards of several medical journals, including Journal of Vascular Surgery, Annals of Vascular Surgery, and Vascular and Endovascular Surgery. He also has served as a reviewer for 20 medical journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, British Journal of Medicine, and Archives of Surgery. He also has been a Traveling Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, along with being an award-winning, international scientific presenter. He has given over 500 invited lectures and has been visiting professor in many medical centers in US and other countries. He has edited 4 vascular books, over 50 book chapters and more than 200 publications in peer reviewed medical and surgical journals.

Dr. Labropoulos also serves on the boards of the International Vascular Foundation and the Institute of Vascular Diseases, two non-profit organizations providing education and humanitarian work. He also has served as a member and panel expert the National Quality Forum and the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Health Organizations.

He trained in vascular medicine and earned his PhD from University of London. He is a member of many vascular societies in US and many other countries. Dr. Labropoulos speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese and Greek.

Here Comes the Bride - And her Mom

We were excited to exhibit Sept. 18 at the What’s Up Weddings Fall Bridal Showcase in Crofton, MD. We were happy to meet many moms of the bride at the Crofton Country Club, discuss how they could look better, feel better and live better in time for the big day. We also were pleased to give away our first-ever, valuable “Private Offer Certificates” to a limited number of Bridal Expo attendees. Watch this space for news on more bridal events, including the big bridal expo in Baltimore this winter.

Lighting the Night for a Good Cause

Center for Vein Restoration proudly sponsored Team Gunter in the Light the Night Walk Sept. 24 in Annapolis, MD. The team raised $90,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to help Extinguish Blood Cancers one step at a time.

Team Gunter is led by Shawna Gunter, a Surgical and Research Assistant at Center for Vein Restoration in Annapolis. Shawna's family and many firefighters walked on behalf of her husband, who is a professional firefighter for the City of Annapolis Fire Department and has battled two different forms of blood cancers.

Said Shawna, "Center for Vein Restoration's support is truly priceless to this team, and the words 'thank you' are simply not enough!"

Dr. Lakhanpal to Present at MAPA Conference

Dr Sanjiv LakhanpalOur President & CEO, Sanjiv Lakhanpal, MD, FACS will be presenting at the Maryland Academy of Physicians Assistants, "Trends in Patient Management" 2011 Fall CME Conference. Dr. Lakhanpal will speak on "The Diagnosis and Treatment of Venous Insufficiency.” The Conference will be held Sept. 14-18 at the Clarion Resort Fontainebleau Hotel in Ocean City, MD.

Khanh Nguyen, D.O. Appointed Senior Medical Officer

Dr Ken Nguyen We are pleased to announce that Khanh Nguyen, D.O., has been appointed Senior Medical Officer of the Center for Vein Restoration.

Dr. Nguyen, based in Greenbelt, Maryland and Alexandria, Virgina, joined CVR in 2009, and coordinates and oversees the efforts of the various clinical and medical staff ensuring the highest quality in medical care and safety.

"I'm thrilled to be taking on this new role," said Dr. Nguyen. "We're in a very exciting field and I'm proud to help the Centers for Vein Research maintain, grow and promote the highest standards we can."

In addition to his role at CVR, Dr. Nguyen serves on the executive board of Silver Spring Emergency Physicians and has been a managing partner since 2005. He is an assistant professor of Emergency Medicine at Georgetown University and is board certified in Emergency Medicine. He continues to be on staff at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring and serves on the Blood Utilization Committee for the hospital.

Dr. Nguyen has a special interest in medical processes and electronic medical records and has been a national speaker and consultant for the McKesson Corporation since 2005. He also is recognized by Cambridge Who's Who in Medicine.

Since joining CVR, Dr. Nguyen has taken on a special interest in improving the quality of patient care and improving patient safety. Dr Nguyen has undergone extensive training in the treatment of venous insufficiency and has done more than 2,000 ablation procedures. In his spare time he enjoys spending time with his wife and four sons.
