Is Your Leg Pain Venous Insufficiency?

venous insufficiency

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF VENOUS INSUFFICIENCY?

Venous insufficiency, the underlying cause of varicose veins and spider veins, is most commonly associated with recurrent aching, unreasonable tiredness of the legs and leg swelling. All too often these symptoms develop over years, so most patients may take their presence as a part of aging. Commonly, women and men first notice only the visible presentations of venous insufficiency (spider veins or large rope-like veins known as varicose veins), not realizing that the pain and discomfort in their legs may be a symptom of something more serious.

WHAT CAUSES VARICOSE VEINS AND SPIDER VEINS?spider veins

Varicose veins and spider veins are caused when the valves of the veins are weakened. Veins, which work against gravity as they carry blood back to the heart, contain one-way valves to prevent the blood from flowing backwards. When the valves weaken, blood collects in the vein. Pooled blood enlarges the vein. This increased pressure in the venous system leads initially to spider veins and subsequently varicose veins. The plasma from this blood pooling exudes out of the veins into the surrounding tissues making the skin look hyper pigmented (darker), ultimately leading to the formation of painful non-healing ulcers. Age, weight, genetics, lack of movement (standing or sitting for long periods of time, i.e. teachers, hair stylists, police officers, etc.), pregnancy and a history of DVT are all well-known causes of this disease.

WHAT OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE TO SOMEONE WITH VENOUS INSUFFICIENCY?

If you’re suffering from venous insufficiency, there are ways to manage the pain. Lifestyle changes, like change in diet and exercising often are a great start. Compression therapy is also a well-known and helpful option. The use of compression garments and/or wraps are known to provide excellent pain relief. Compression therapy puts pressure on the legs that helps increase blood circulation. Although these are excellent ways to manage the symptoms, they will not rid you of venous insufficiency altogether

Minimally invasive in office procedures are the way to go if you’re looking to regain your leg health. These procedures take about an hour of your time, and in most cases patients can go back to work (if they so desire) the same day. This is often seen as a medical necessity by insurance companies and therefore, your procedure may be covered.
