What Causes Enlarged Hand Veins?

Bulging hand veins are most often caused by the effect of gravity and age-related loss of surrounding tissue. Treatment is considered a cosmetic endeavor and is not covered by insurance. In very rare cases, there may be an underlying medical condition; therefore, an evaluation by a Midwest Vein Center physician is required prior to scheduling treatment.

Common Side Effects of Hand Vein Treatment

  • Bruising
  • Temporary discoloration
  • Tenderness
  • Inflammation
  • Permanent staining of the skin, matting (tiny red veins) and skin ulceration are less common, yet possible side effects of sclerotherapy treatment for hand veins.

Non-Invasive, Non-Surgical Hand Vein Treatment at The Center for Vein Restoration

Sclerotherapy is the treatment of choice for enlarged hand veins and consists of the injection of medicine (a sclerosant), which results in closure and eventual disintegration of the vein. It is important to understand that the disappearance of the vein is gradual and most often requires multiple treatment sessions. It’s not unusual for the healing process to span several months, which must be taken into consideration when scheduling treatment.

Patients are fully awake during the procedure and can drive themselves to and from the appointment. No anesthetic is necessary. A tight compression bandage is applied post-treatment and may be removed after 48 hours. Adequate compression is a very important part of post-treatment care.
