Dr. Putterman's medical journey began at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree. He then completed an internship and residency in pediatrics at what was known as Charlotte Memorial Hospital, now Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center. As the senior partner and founder of Matthews Children's Clinic in Charlotte, Dr. Putterman built a thriving pediatric practice before making a significant career shift.
In the late 1990s, a colleague introduced Dr. Putterman to vein care. "I had no intention of ever leaving pediatrics," Dr. Putterman recalls, "but I found the opportunity to work in a new and evolving field exciting." At the time, vein treatment was largely limited to surgical stripping, a procedure associated with numerous horror stories. This new challenge piqued Dr. Putterman's interest, leading him to practice vein care exclusively after that.
Dr. Putterman's transition to vein care marked the beginning of a new chapter in his career. Board-certified in phlebology since 2009, he has dedicated the past two decades to mastering the treatment of vein disease, continually expanding his skills and knowledge to stay at the forefront of this rapidly advancing field.
Why Dr. Putterman Chose CVR
Dr. Putterman's decision to join CVR was influenced by his long-standing relationship with Dr. Draughn, lead physician at the CVR clinics Charlotte and Gastonia (formally Vein Specialists of the Carolinas), as well as his desire to continue offering state-of-the-art vein care to his patients:
"I'm excited about the opportunity to work with CVR. I've seen firsthand the impact of vein disease on patients, and I'm committed to providing the best possible care." – Dr. Paul Putterman
Though new to CVR, Dr. Putterman has recognized the organization's strengths. "CVR is a well-organized, supportive environment," he notes. "The emphasis on patient care and education aligns perfectly with my own philosophy."
For Dr. Putterman, patient care goes beyond treating a condition—it's about truly understanding each patient's unique experience.
"My goal is to educate the patient on vein disease," he explains. "So many patients have had their symptoms minimized by other physicians who may not fully understand the implications of vein disease. I take the time to explain things in language they can understand, which makes a big difference." – Dr. Paul Putterman
This commitment to education and communication is a hallmark of Dr. Putterman's practice. His background in pediatrics has honed his ability to explain complex medical information in a way that is accessible and reassuring. "Patients often tell me that I'm able to explain things clearly and make them feel heard," Dr. Putterman says. "That's what I strive for in every patient interaction."
Dr. Putterman's extensive experience in vein care includes a wide range of advanced treatments, from sclerotherapy to minimally invasive procedures like radiofrequency ablation and endovenous laser ablation. "When I started in vein disease, there were no ablations or advanced techniques," he recalls. "Everything was done with ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy."
Over the years, Dr. Putterman has become highly skilled in these procedures, particularly in targeting even the smallest veins with precision. His expertise allows him to tailor treatment plans to each patient's needs, ensuring the best possible outcomes.
One of Dr. Putterman's strengths is his ability to distinguish between different types of sclerotherapy—visual and ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy—and apply the most appropriate technique based on the patient's condition. "Visual sclerotherapy is used for the smallest veins visible on the surface, while foam sclerotherapy is designed for larger veins, often just beneath the surface," he explains. "The key is using the right approach for each case."
Dr. Putterman's approach to patient care is deeply rooted in compassion and a desire to improve his patients' quality of life. He shares a touching story of a patient who, after treatment, could walk up Grandfather Mountain in North Carolina for the first time in years. "She was so happy, she cried," Dr. Putterman recalls. "It’s moments like that which make my work so rewarding.”
For Dr. Putterman, the most important message he wants to convey to his patients is that they are valued.
“Every patient I see is important to me,” he says. “I listen to what they’re feeling and validate their symptoms. At the end of treatment, I want them to feel that this was the best decision they ever made.” – Dr. Paul Putterman
He extends this same commitment to referring physicians, assuring them that their patients will receive the highest level of care. “I want referring physicians to know that their patients are in good hands,” Dr. Putterman emphasizes. “My goal is for their patients to come back and thank them for the referral.”
