Varicose veins are often considered a warm weather concern, since this is the time of year when the legs come out to play. While the aesthetic problem of varicose veins may increase in summer, other symptoms associated with those veins don’t go away by hiding the legs under pants and jeans. Check out these reasons why varicose veins are not just a seasonal issue, and why winter might actually be the best time to seek treatment for the problem.

Underlying Causes of Varicose Veins

While you can sneak those bulging, twisting veins under winter clothing this time of year, hiding the problem does not address the underlying causes of those diseased veins. Venous insufficiency is a serious problem that can worsen over time. It occurs when tiny valves inside the veins that normally keep blood flowing in a single direction become damaged and wear out. Blood can begin to pool inside the leg, resulting in swelling in the vessels and the appearance of varicose veins.

If venous insufficiency is left unchecked, it can result in damage to the tissue and skin surrounding the vessels. Skin changes like discoloration and thickening can occur. Eventually, open sores, known as skin ulcers, can develop around the ankle area. These sores are prone to infection and can be very challenging to treat. Getting vein treatment before these problems occur is the only effective way to prevent them entirely.

Varicose Vein Symptoms

For some, varicose veins become more than a cosmetic problem to hide during cold weather months. Those unsightly veins may also be accompanied by one or more of the following:

  • Heaviness and fatigue
  • Achiness or burning
  • Leg cramps, especially at night
  • Restless leg syndrome
  • Swelling of the lower leg and foot

Symptoms will persist throughout the year, sometimes keeping you from activities you love and diminishing your quality of life. The good news is treatment to eliminate the appearance of varicose veins will get rid of those nagging symptoms as well.

Seeking Treatment Now

If you are suffering with varicose veins, winter is an excellent time to seek treatment. During the winter months, it is much easier to protect treated legs from the UV rays of the sun while they heal. Any bruising or swelling that occurs during treatment will be completely gone before those spring shorts start making and appearance. Also, relief from uncomfortable symptoms can make your cold weather season much more enjoyable than you thought possible.
