At Center for Vein Restoration (CVR), we strive to provide world-class vein care for patients with venous conditions, from common varicose veins to more complex vein-related disorders. We’re thrilled to introduce Dr. Alfred Hurley, an experienced interventional cardiologist, as the lead physician at CVR’s McLean, Virginia, vein clinic location.

Dr. Hurley brings a unique and comprehensive background to CVR. Throughout his distinguished career, he has developed expertise in treating deep and superficial vein diseases. We sat down with Dr. Hurley to learn more about his journey to vein care, why he chose CVR, and his philosophy on patient care.

From Heart Health to Vein Health: A Physician’s Journey

Dr. Alfred Hurley’s career began in interventional cardiology, where he specialized in treating emergent heart attacks and limb-threatening (your choice if this phrase makes it too wordy) peripheral arterial disease (PAD). According to the Cleveland Clinic, interventional cardiology is a specialized branch of cardiology focused on diagnosing and treating cardiovascular diseases through minimally invasive procedures, often using catheters. These procedures, without the need for open surgery, offer quicker recovery times and reduced risks for patients.

Dr. Hurley’s extensive training took him across the country. He earned his medical degree at the University of Kentucky. He completed his internal medicine residency at Prisma Health/University of South Carolina in Greenville, South Carolina, general cardiology fellowship in Milwaukee, and subsequent interventional cardiology fellowship in West Virginia. His first professional experience took place in Delaware, where he honed his skills in minimally invasive procedures.

Dr. Hurley first encountered vein care while working on PAD and other cardiovascular conditions. “I treated patients with blockages in their arteries, but it was during this time that I started managing vein patients, specifically working with the deep vein system by placing stents,” he shared. His exposure to vein disease grew, and he began to treat varicose veins and venous insufficiency, eventually leading him to specialize entirely in vein care.

A Passion for Positive Patient Outcomes

Dr. Hurley’s decision to shift from cardiology to vein care came from the transformative outcomes he witnessed in his patients. He describes how many individuals suffered from venous insufficiency for years without answers, only to experience life-changing relief through relatively simple outpatient procedures.

“Patients would come in with pain that had lasted years. After a quick and minimally invasive procedure, their quality of life would improve drastically. Seeing how grateful they were for the change made me realize that this is an area of medicine where I could really make a difference.”–Dr. Alfred Hurley

This personal fulfillment and the opportunity to be closer to his family in Northern Virginia led Dr. Hurley to transition into vein care full-time. He views the field as a way to help individuals regain their health and as an opportunity to educate both patients and the medical community about the often-overlooked condition of chronic venous insufficiency.

Why Dr. Hurley Chose Center for Vein Restoration

When asked why he chose to join Center for Vein Restoration, Dr. Hurley said, “CVR offers a perfect fit for my expertise. My experience at Center for Vascular Medicine, where I treated deep vein conditions like May-Thurner syndrome and pelvic congestion syndrome, pairs seamlessly with CVR’s focus on treating superficial veins and venous insufficiency.”

At CVR, Dr. Hurley has found an environment that values continuity of care, which is an important aspect of his practice. “By managing patients comprehensively—from deep vein diseases to superficial vein issues—I can ensure a holistic approach to their treatment,” he shared. He also appreciates CVR’s commitment to providing cutting-edge, minimally invasive treatments in a patient-centered setting, which aligns perfectly with his own philosophy of care.

A Patient-Centered Approach to Vein Care

One of Dr. Hurley’s core values as a physician is patient education and empowerment. He believes that informed patients are empowered to take control of their health, which is why he prioritizes thorough explanations and open communication throughout the treatment process.

“I never want patients to feel like they don’t know what’s going on or that something is being done to them without their full understanding. I make sure they know what’s happening at every step, from their first appointment to the procedure and beyond.” –Dr. Alfred Hurley

Dr. Hurley emphasizes that patients will hear this message of understanding and empowerment from him and the entire staff at CVR. His goal is to ensure that patients feel confident in their care and know what to expect as they move forward with treatment.

Skills That Set Dr. Hurley Apart

In addition to his technical expertise, Dr. Hurley’s ability to simplify complex medical conditions is one of the unique skills he brings to the practice:

“I think one of my strengths is breaking down complicated information so patients can understand it. This clarity allows patients to feel more comfortable with their treatment and helps them make informed decisions about their health.”–Dr. Alfred Hurley

Award-Winning Health Care

His peers and the medical community have recognized Dr. Hurley’s dedication to patient care. In 2021, he was voted a top doctor in Delaware, a testament to his commitment to excellence in his field.
