Center for Vein Restoration (CVR) is pleased to welcome Ramy Ali, MD, ABIM, to Center for Vein Restoration’s Columbia, South Carolina vein clinic. Dr. Ali is a board-certified internal medicine physician who spent more than a decade in inpatient hospital medicine before completing advanced training in venous and lymphatic medicine through CVR's prestigious fellowship program.
That combination, a deep internal medicine background paired with focused, hands-on vein and lymphatic training, means Columbia-area patients get a physician who looks at the whole picture, not just a vein on the ultrasound screen.
"My philosophy of patient care is to treat every patient the way I would want my own family members to be treated. That means providing compassionate, meticulous, and evidence-based care, while also taking the time to understand each patient's individual concerns and goals." — Dr. Ramy Ali

Dr. Ali didn't set out to become a vein specialist. After completing his internal medicine residency and internship at Jersey City Medical Center/Barnabas Health, he spent more than ten years in inpatient hospital medicine. Eventually, he was drawn to a subspecialty that allowed him to combine procedural work with the medical decision-making he'd built his career on.
"My background is internal medicine, and I spent over ten years in inpatient hospital medicine. I wanted a subspecialty that combined procedural and medicinal treatment, and I found that in vein care — you see a difference in patients quickly, and that keeps you inspired."

To complete that transition, Dr. Ali graduated from CVR's Venous and Lymphatic Medicine Fellowship program. This training rotated him through multiple vascular centers and physicians before he arrived in Columbia. He's currently eligible to sit for certification through the American Board of Venous & Lymphatic Medicine (ABVLM).
"Going back into training mode after ten years in hospital medicine wasn't easy. But I trained with great doctors in different vein care offices and learned what works. I then built on this using my own style of care."

A Philosophy Built on Listening
Dr. Ali's approach to every visit begins before he discusses treatment. "From the moment I walk into the room, I try to bring positive energy and help the patient feel comfortable and at ease," he said. "I believe patients should clearly understand their condition, their treatment plan, and the reasoning behind the care plan, so decisions are made through mutual understanding.
“I always remind myself that although seeing patients is part of our daily routine, that encounter may be the highlight of their day — keeping that perspective helps me stay attentive and present during every visit."

Helping Nervous Patients Feel at Ease
First-visit anxiety is common, and Dr. Ali says he plans for it. "Some patients get anxious about getting treatments," he noted. "I walk into the room, try to reassure patients, make sure they're informed about what the procedure includes, and treat patients like family."
Explaining Vein Disease in Plain Language
Dr. Ali is deliberate in translating ultrasound findings into something patients can use. "The main thing is to use simple words when explaining what the patient has — their condition, the procedure, and the type of treatment they require," he said.
"Be simple, concise, and informative, and make sure that after each encounter, patients fully understand their vein disease and what's needed to get through the treatment process."
— Dr. Ramy Ali
Dr. Ali treats the full range of venous and lymphatic conditions using minimally invasive vein treatments, including catheter-based thermal ablation and injectable therapies, including:
Dr. Ali is especially attentive to the relationship between his patients and their primary care providers. "Referred patients receive thoughtful, well-coordinated care," he said. "I bring more than ten years of internal medicine experience, which lets me look beyond the veins and evaluate the whole patient."
That whole-patient lens matters even when a referral doesn't turn out to be vein-related. "If a patient is referred to me and their symptoms ultimately don't appear to be venous in origin, I still take the time to discuss the findings with them, explain other possible causes, and help guide them toward the appropriate next step. I always communicate that back to the referring physician, too," Dr. Ali said.
"We're all part of the same care team, and good communication helps provide a better patient experience and a stronger healthcare outcome overall."

Originally from Egypt, Dr. Ali earned his medical degree with honors from the Faculty of Medicine at Ainshams University in Cairo. He speaks English, Arabic, and conversational medical Spanish with patients.
Before relocating to South Carolina, Dr. Ali lived near the beach in Florida, where fishing and beach days with friends were regular weekend staples. His family is spread across Egypt and several U.S. states, and he makes a point of visiting them regularly. "I like to keep in touch with them, so I go visit frequently, at least once or twice a year if I can," he said, adding that his mother visited him in the U.S. earlier this year. He also maintains a regular workout routine: "Having that balance between your work life and social life is crucial to keep going, feel balanced, and have the energy to continue what you do."
"You're not alone. Chronic venous disease is common, and a lot of people live with leg pain, heaviness, or swelling for years before seeking care," Dr. Ali said. "But you don't have to accept that. Treatment today is far less invasive—most of it is done right in the office with local anesthesia, with little to no disruption to your routine.
Our minimally invasive treatment options help you feel better, function better, and get back to the things you enjoy quickly."

Q. What conditions does Dr. Ali treat, and do I need a referral?
A: Dr. Ali treats chronic venous insufficiency, varicose veins, spider veins, lymphedema and chronic leg swelling, and venous ulcers. A referral isn't required—CVR offers complimentary consultations for patients who want to sit down with the doctor, discuss their symptoms, and learn more before deciding whether an ultrasound or treatment is needed.
Q. I've had achy, heavy, or swollen legs for years and just assumed it was part of getting older. Should I still get checked?
A: Yes. As Dr. Ali puts it, "you're not alone" — many patients live with these symptoms for years before seeking care, often attributing them to being on their feet all day or simply getting older. Chronic venous disease is common and frequently underdiagnosed, and a simple venous ultrasound can help determine whether an underlying vein problem is contributing to your symptoms.
Q. What happens during my first appointment?
A: Your first visit starts with a conversation about your symptoms — heaviness, aching, swelling, cramping, or visible veins. Based on that discussion, Dr. Ali and his team may perform a detailed duplex ultrasound of your leg veins. He personally reviews the results with you in plain language, and if your symptoms and ultrasound findings point to venous disease, he'll walk you through an individualized treatment plan built around your anatomy, history, and goals.
Q. Does CVR Columbia accept my insurance?
A: CVR works with a wide range of insurance plans, and the clinic's team can verify your specific coverage before your visit.
