Dr. Anderson:
“Only about 20 percent of people keep their well-meaning but illusive resolutions. While this may seem like a small number, those who do stick with it experience meaningful health benefits—especially when it comes to their veins.”
Dr. Anderson discussed how simple lifestyle changes like weight loss and exercise can significantly improve blood circulation, reduce the risk of varicose veins, and enhance overall well-being.
Dr. Anderson:
“Exercise is one of the best ways to keep your veins healthy. Arteries benefit from exercise because they deliver oxygen-rich blood to our muscles, but veins also play a crucial role. They return blood back to the heart, and movement helps keep that process working efficiently.
When you stay active, your leg muscles help pump blood upward against gravity, preventing it from pooling in your veins. This reduces the risk of varicose veins and keeps your legs feeling lighter and less fatigued.”
Dr. Anderson suggests that even small amounts of movement can make a big difference in your vein health. If you sit for long periods at work, take a quick walk around the office or stretch your legs every hour. If you’re not a fan of the gym, try activities like swimming, biking, or even a brisk walk around your neighborhood. The key is consistency.
Carrying excess weight puts additional pressure on your veins, making it harder for blood to flow properly. Over time, this can weaken the valves in your veins, leading to varicose veins or other circulatory issues.
Dr. Anderson:
“Keeping a healthy weight is one of the best things you can do for your veins,” Dr. Anderson explains. “It reduces the strain on your lower body and allows your veins to function as they should.”
Dr. Anderson urges losing even a small amount of weight to have a positive impact on circulation. Combining regular exercise with a balanced diet can help achieve and maintain a healthy weight, ultimately improving overall vascular health.
Dr. Anderson:
“Many people participate in ‘Dry January,’ where they abstain from alcohol for the first month of the year. While this is often done for general health reasons, it also directly impacts circulation.
Alcohol provides empty calories, which contribute to weight gain. It can also cause dehydration, which thickens the blood and makes circulation more difficult.”
Cutting back on alcohol can help maintain a healthy weight, reduce strain on the circulatory system, and improve overall vein function. If you’re considering drinking less, Dr. Anderson suggests swapping alcoholic beverages for water, herbal tea, or other non-sugary drinks to stay hydrated and support healthy circulation.
Smoking is one of the most significant risk factors for poor circulation. It damages the blood vessels, reduces oxygen flow, and contributes to the hardening of arteries.
Dr. Anderson:
“Smoking is a major contributor to artery disease. If you’re a smoker, quitting is one of the best things you can do for your overall health and your arteries.”
If you need help quitting, Dr. Anderson recommends speaking to a healthcare provider about resources such as nicotine replacement therapies, support groups, or prescription medications that can assist in the process.
The good news? You don’t have to overhaul your entire lifestyle overnight to see improvements. Small, consistent changes add up over time. If you’ve been keeping up with a New Year’s resolution, whether exercising more, eating better, or drinking less alcohol, keep going!
Dr. Anderson:
“If you’ve kept a resolution, even for only a few weeks or months, don’t stop! Particularly if you feel a benefit from it. Your veins—and your overall health—will thank you!”
