After a long day on your feet, it’s normal to feel a little tired. But if you’re constantly dealing with aching, heavy, or swollen legs at the end of the day, it might be more than just fatigue; it could be a sign of a vein problem.
According to Dr. Luis Barajas, the lead vein physician at Center for Vein Restoration (CVR) in Greenwood, Indiana, persistent leg pain may signal a common but often overlooked condition called venous insufficiency:
“Most people with healthy legs don’t think about their legs when they get home from work. If you’re still thinking about your legs because of heaviness, aching, or cramping, there could be an underlying vein issue.” – Dr. Luis Barajas
If your legs are constantly aching, heavy, or swollen after work, it's time to take your symptoms seriously. The vein experts at Center for Vein Restoration can identify the root cause of your achy legs and help you feel better fast using minimally invasive treatments performed right in the office.

Venous insufficiency occurs when the valves in the veins, especially in the legs, stop working properly. Instead of pushing blood back up to the heart, these faulty valves allow blood to pool in the lower limbs. Over time, this extra pressure leads to varicose veins, spider veins, swelling, skin changes, and even open sores (called venous ulcers).
According to the Society for Vascular Surgery, chronic venous insufficiency affects up to 40 percent of people in the United States and is more common in women, older adults, and people who stand or sit for long periods.
It’s easy to assume that vein problems only affect people with large, bulging varicose veins. But Dr. Barajas emphasizes that’s not always the case. “Nearly half of my patients don’t have obvious varicose veins,” he explains. “They may just feel fatigue, swelling, and night cramps, but those are still signs of vein disease.”
Vein problems can also cause:

Certain jobs can increase your risk of vein disease, especially if they require standing all day:
“We see a lot of factory workers, nurses, and hairdressers. A study found that 65% of people with standing jobs experienced worsening of vein disease over time. Meanwhile, people who walked more had a much lower risk. Even desk jobs can contribute to vein problems due to poor venous circulation from sitting for too long.” – Dr. Luis Barajas
You don’t need to wait until your veins are visible to seek help. “Ideally, we want to see patients when they start noticing leg discomfort,” says Dr. Barajas. “That’s before the swelling starts and before the skin begins to discolor.”
Skin changes caused by untreated venous disease, such as dark patches on the lower legs, are often irreversible. Chronic inflammation from poor venous circulation can lead to permanent skin damage and, in some cases, painful ulcers.
The best part? Modern vein treatment is minimally invasive and highly effective.
At CVR, the evaluation begins with a simple conversation and a non-invasive ultrasound to map the veins and assess blood flow. “We look for signs of reflux and make sure there are no blood clots,” says Dr. Barajas. “Then we recommend treatment based on what we find.”
Today’s advanced minimally invasive treatments include (but aren’t limited to):
“These are in-office procedures. Patients come in, receive treatment, and return to work the next day. Most feel significantly better within two to four weeks.” – Dr. Luis Barajas
While medical treatment can address the root problem, there are simple lifestyle changes that can also improve vein health:
Too often, people chalk up their leg pain to aging or overuse. However, vein disease is common, treatable, and best addressed early, before symptoms worsen.
“Our understanding of venous disease has come a long way in the past two decades,” says Dr. Barajas. “Gone are the days of hospital stays and long recoveries. Now, with minimally invasive options, we can help patients feel better and improve their quality of life.”
