Symptoms of Varicose Veins (And how to Treat Them!)

Written By Tony Carabasi III, MD, FACS

You probably know you have varicose veins because you see the bulging, twisting lines on the lower leg. But did you know those swollen vessels can be accompanied by a number of symptoms as well? You may not associate your visible veins with your leg fatigue or cramping in the middle of the night. However, those symptoms are often related to varicose veins, which means eliminating the veins may eliminate the symptoms as well.

Causes of Varicose Veins

Varicose veins may be due to an underlying vein disorder known as venous insufficiency, which is also responsible for the symptoms you might be experiencing. This condition develops when small valves inside the vessels wear out or become damaged over time. The valves move blood toward the heart, and when they no longer work properly, blood can pool inside the vein. This pooling or reflux then leads to the appearance of a varicose vein.

The only way to eliminate varicose veins completely is to stop venous insufficiency at its source. This means to eradicate the damaged vessel so that blood can reroute naturally to healthy veins in the vicinity of the eliminated vein. The improved blood flow and pressure inside the veins will also successfully get rid of those uncomfortable symptoms.

Symptoms of Varicose Veins

Venous insufficiency can lead to a number of possible symptoms:

  • Heaviness or fatigue in the lower legs, especially at the end of the day
  • Leg cramps or a restless feeling in the legs at night when you try to sleep
  • Swelling, also known as edema, in the lower leg, ankle and foot
  • Skin may turn red or brown and take on a tight, leathery texture
  • Small sores may form around the ankle, which can quickly grow to large, gaping ulcerations

Treating symptoms in their earlier stages, such as when you feel pain or cramping in the lower leg, provides you with the best prognosis for your venous disease. If the symptoms are left unchecked for too long, progressive symptoms like skin discoloration can become permanent. Fortunately, treatment for varicose veins has evolved considerable over the past decade or so, making it easy to eliminate those tortuous vessels at the earliest signs of a problem.
