At Center for Vein Restoration (CVR), we proudly offer cutting-edge, office-based vein treatment options for vein conditions, including varicose veins and spider veins. For this blog, we were excited to have interviewed Czestochowa Francois, MD, a dedicated, board-certified vein care specialist at CVR’s clinics in Purcellville, Virginia, and Leesburg, Virginia.

With a compassionate, personalized approach to vein care, Dr. Francois combines expertise in venous health with a passion for improving her patient's quality of life.

Dr. Francois generously spent time with us to answer the most common questions patients ask about vein ablation, which is one of the most effective treatments for varicose veins, as well as the causes of varicose veins and tips for maintaining vein health.

What Causes Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins occur when blood flow in the veins is disrupted, often due to faulty vein valves. This causes blood to pool in the legs, resulting in swollen, twisted veins visible beneath the skin. Spider veins, which are smaller and less severe, can also result from similar underlying issues and show up on the legs in a less prominent way.

According to Dr. Francois, the most common causes of varicose veins and other forms of venous insufficiency include:

  • Genetics: Family history is a significant risk factor.
  • Occupation: Jobs requiring prolonged standing or sitting, such as teaching or desk work, can contribute to vein problems.
  • Gender: Women are more likely to develop vein disease due to hormonal changes, especially during pregnancy or menopause.
  • Weight Changes: Obesity, weight gain, and loss can place additional stress on the veins.

The Mayo Clinic singles out family history and obesity as the two leading causes increasing the risk of vein disease and its symptoms, including leg pain, swelling, and heaviness.

What is Vein Ablation?

Vein ablation is a minimally invasive vein treatment designed to close malfunctioning veins and restore healthy blood flow. Dr. Francois explains that this procedure directly addresses the root cause of venous insufficiency by sealing the damaged veins, allowing blood to reroute through healthier ones.

There are several ways we can perform vein ablation, says Dr. Francois. These include:

  1. Heating the vein shut with radiofrequency ablation (RFA) or endovenous laser treatment (EVLT).
  2. Gluing the vein shut with specialized medical adhesives.
  3. Sclerotherapy, where a solution is injected into the diseased vein, collapsing it.
  4. Manual vein removal involves removing pieces of the damaged vein. Called ambulatory phlebectomy, this minimally invasive outpatient procedure is performed by making tiny incisions that rarely ever require stitches. It does not require general anesthesia, and patients return to their normal routine immediately with few restrictions.

Dr. Francois adds that the type of vein ablation used depends on the patient’s anatomy and specific vein problems.

How Does Vein Ablation Compare to Other Treatments?

Unlike treatments that only address the appearance of varicose or spider veins, vein ablation targets the underlying issue.

“Treating visible veins without addressing the source is like putting a salve on a wound—it may look better temporarily, but it won’t resolve deeper manifestations of vein disease.” –Dr. Czestochowa Francois

Studies Show Newer, Better Vein Treatments Are Now Available

A study reported by the Cleveland Clinic titled “Varicose Veins: Newer, Better Treatments Available” emphasizes the importance of recognizing varicose veins as a medical condition affecting up to 33 percent of women and 20 percent of men. The paper highlights how advancements in minimally invasive treatments, such as endovenous ablation and laser therapy, have improved patient outcomes by reducing recovery time, lowering risks, and achieving better long-term results.

These findings underscore the importance of seeking specialized care to address this common condition.

Can Vein Ablation Cure Varicose Veins?

While vein ablation eliminates malfunctioning veins, Dr. Francois advises patients to view vein disease as a chronic condition:

“We can cure individual veins, but vein disease, also called venous hypertension, requires ongoing management.” –Dr. Czestochowa Francois

For long-term success, Dr. Francois recommends:

  • Wearing compression stockings during travel or prolonged activity.
  • Periodic follow-up visits with a vein expert.
  • Small maintenance treatments to prevent the need for more extensive procedures later.

Who is a Good Candidate for Vein Ablation?

Symptoms are the key factor in determining candidacy for vein ablation. Dr. Francois explains, “We prioritize improving quality of life. If a patient’s vein disease isn’t causing significant symptoms, we may recommend conservative management instead.”

Common symptoms that indicate a need for ablation include:

  • Cramping or “charley horses”
  • Leg swelling
  • Dull aching or heaviness in the legs
  • Visible varicose veins or spider veins

What Can Patients Expect During and After Vein Ablation?

Dr. Francois reassures those hesitant about vein ablation: “It’s a minimally invasive procedure, and most patients tolerate it very well.”

During the procedure, patients can expect:

  • A short treatment time (30 to 45 minutes).
  • Minimal discomfort, often managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
  • Personalized follow-up care, including a three-day post-procedure ultrasound to ensure everything looks good.

“Most patients notice immediate improvements, with significant results by the one-month mark,” says Dr. Francois.

What Are the Risks of Vein Ablation?

While vein ablation is safe, potential risks include pain, temporary swelling, or a slight chance of deep vein thrombosis (DVT):

“We minimize these risks with careful monitoring. Every patient receives my personal number to contact me directly with any concerns.” –Dr. Czestochowa Francois
