We are pleased to welcome Demetrios J. Karamichos, MD, RVT, RPVI, DABVLM, and Region Vein to Center for Vein Restoration (CVR), expanding expert vein care for patients across Northwest Indiana. For nearly two decades, Dr. Karamichos has combined advanced minimally invasive treatments with a philosophy of individualized, hands-on patient care.
Now, as part of CVR's nationwide network of 130+ locations across 23 states, patients in Munster and the surrounding communities gain access to world-class vein care backed by the nation's largest physician-led vein practice.

Dr. Karamichos's journey to venous medicine began unconventionally. After completing his medical degree at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago and his Family Practice residency at MacNeal Memorial Hospital in Illinois, he spent more than a decade in primary care practice. But after years of treating acute illnesses and managing chronic disease across a broad spectrum of conditions, he realized his passion lay elsewhere.
"I spent about 10 years in primary care and then decided to pursue my interest in venous medicine. I researched and made the switch to treating veins exclusively, and I've been doing that successfully for almost 20 years now."

That decision proved transformative. In 2009, he became one of the first physicians in the country to earn certification from the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine (ABVLM), a distinction that reflected both his clinical acumen and his commitment to the specialty.
Over the following years, Dr. Karamichos earned two additional credentials that represent the highest standard in vascular expertise: Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) and Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation (RPVI). These credentials, earned in 2010, underscore his dedication to precise diagnosis and hands-on procedural care.
In 2020, Dr. Karamichos founded Region Vein, now part of Center for Vein Restoration. His mission was straightforward: to be the only vein specialist in the area who worked five days a week, treated patients exclusively for venous disease, and was accessible to his community. He has remained true to that commitment every day since.
What sets Dr. Karamichos apart is not just his clinical expertise, but his genuine love for the work and the patients he treats.
"I would say the part I enjoy most is the rapport and interaction with patients. Most, if not all, patients are excited to be there. They're happy to be there. It's not like your average medical office where someone has to be there because they're ill or to treat a condition. The vast majority of patients there are excited to be there."

That enthusiasm is contagious. Patients often remark after treatment that their anxiety was unfounded, that the procedure was far less daunting than they feared, and that they wish they had sought care sooner. Dr. Karamichos responds with the pragmatism that defines his approach: "The best way to reassure patients is to treat them. Once they realize that afterward, most of their worries were unfounded."
His philosophy of patient care is rooted in simplicity and respect. He spends as much time with each patient as needed to answer questions and address concerns. He personally manages every patient's care at every visit; there is no rotating team, no intermediary. Patients see the same physician who diagnosed them, and that physician remains their advocate throughout treatment.
"I think my philosophy is probably similar to a lot of other doctors who've been practicing for a long time. I spend as much time with the patient as they need to, not only to answer their questions, but to treat their condition. My goal is to treat your condition effectively, respect your time, and help you get back to your life without complications or downtime."

With his RVT and RPVI credentials, Dr. Karamichos brings specialized expertise in vascular ultrasound interpretation, ensuring precise diagnosis of venous insufficiency. He recognizes symptoms that other physicians sometimes overlook, including leg swelling, cramping, and restless legs, which are often dismissed or attributed to other causes when they may signal underlying vein disease.
At Center for Vein Restoration, Dr. Karamichos offers a full range of outpatient, minimally invasive treatments, including (but not limited to):
All procedures are performed in-office, typically under local anesthesia, with minimal downtime. Patients walk in, walk out, and return to their normal activities. Most treatments are covered by insurance when symptoms are present.
Outside the clinic, Dr. Karamichos is an active husband and grandfather. He and his wife enjoy participating in a couple’s golf league every Friday during the summer months, and they take an annual winter trip to the Rockies for skiing. Travel has always been a passion, though these days much of their leisure time is devoted to visiting their two grandchildren, a three-year-old granddaughter and a two-year-old grandson who live out of town.
"We're at that point in our life where we have grandkids, so a lot of our free time gets taken up by traveling to see them," Dr. Karamichos says with evident joy. "Which is a great thing."
When considering his next chapter, Dr. Karamichos evaluated several options. His decision to join CVR was swift and clear.
"CVR, I think, by far, was not only the largest but the best organized, the best run, and the most well-known of the vein providers in the country. And on top of that, I've had some friends of mine who are also physicians and vein physicians who joined CVR in the last year or two, who had nothing but good things to say about not only their experience but the transition and then their current state. So for the most part, it was an easy choice."

A: No! Dr. Karamichos remains your physician, and he will continue managing your care personally at every visit, just as he has since Region Vein opened in 2020. The CVR partnership adds advanced clinical resources, technology, and national expertise behind the scenes, but your hands-on, individualized experience with Dr. Karamichos is unchanged.
Q: Are vein treatments really as minimally invasive as described, and what should I expect?
A: Yes. Procedures like radiofrequency ablation and foam sclerotherapy are performed in-office under local anesthesia with no incisions, no general anesthesia, and no hospital stay. Most patients walk in, receive treatment, and walk out the same day, returning to normal activities immediately—though strenuous exercise is typically limited for a few days.
Q: Does insurance cover vein treatments?
A: Most vein procedures are covered by insurance when symptoms of venous disease are present, such as pain, swelling, heaviness, or visible varicose veins.
