Before becoming a physician, Dr. Sagato spent several years as a research engineer, where he helped design implants for total hip and knee replacement surgeries. His work focused on developing novel orthopedic implant materials, specialty bone cement, and innovative test methods for FDA evaluation.
This groundbreaking research earned him multiple awards in medical device development, highlighting his scientific precision and problem-solving mindset.
That early career in orthopedics taught him how innovation can directly improve patients’ quality of life—a perspective he carries into vein care today.

After earning his medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine, Dr. Sagato completed a residency in family medicine at Marquette Family Medicine in Michigan. During residency, he trained alongside an interventional radiologist and saw firsthand the life-changing results of modern vein care.
“I found the outcomes for patients with vein disease deeply rewarding,” he recalls. “That’s when I knew venous and lymphatic medicine was where I wanted to focus my career.” – Dr. Frank Sagato

Dr. Sagato describes his approach to vein care as conservative and individualized. He believes every decision to pursue a procedure should be guided by a patient’s symptoms, lifestyle, and goals for improvement, whether functional or cosmetic.
“I pride myself on taking the time to listen to each patient, review their images with them, and make sure they feel truly heard during every visit,” he explains. “If a patient doesn’t need vein treatment, I’ll guide them toward the right specialist for their care.” – Dr. Frank Sagato
Vein disease often develops slowly, and many people dismiss its symptoms as normal signs of aging. Dr. Sagato emphasizes that symptoms such as leg heaviness, cramps, and restless legs may indicate chronic venous insufficiency.
“These are not symptoms you have to live with,” he says. “With today’s minimally invasive treatments, we can significantly reduce discomfort, restore mobility, and improve quality of life.” – Dr. Frank Sagato
One of the hallmarks of Dr. Sagato’s practice is direct patient access. He ensures that anyone under his care has a direct line to reach him with questions or concerns, especially after procedures.
“I want my patients to know that if they come to my office, they’ll see me personally. They’ll leave with a treatment plan designed in their best interest—and they’ll always know they have someone to call if they need support.” – Dr. Frank Sagato
We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Frank Sagato to CVR and the New Hampshire community. With his rare combination of engineering innovation, fellowship training, and a deeply human-centered approach to care, he is already making a difference for patients.

1. What type of doctor treats varicose veins and vein disease?
Vein care is typically provided by physicians trained in venous and lymphatic medicine, vascular surgery, interventional radiology, or related specialties. Many complete additional fellowship training focused specifically on diagnosing and treating vein disease using minimally invasive techniques.
2. What board certifications should I look for in a vein physician?
Common and respected credentials include board certification in vascular surgery, interventional radiology, or family/internal medicine with added venous specialization. Some physicians also hold certification through the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine (ABVLM), which reflects advanced expertise in vein disorders.
3. What is fellowship training in venous and lymphatic medicine?
A fellowship is advanced, hands-on training completed after residency. In venous and lymphatic medicine, this includes mastering ultrasound diagnostics, performing minimally invasive vein procedures, managing complications, and providing long-term disease care.
4. How important is experience when choosing a vein specialist?
Experience matters significantly. Physicians who perform a high volume of vein procedures tend to have greater technical precision, stronger diagnostic insight, and more consistent patient outcomes.
5. Do vein physicians treat both medical and cosmetic concerns?
Yes. Vein specialists address medical conditions like chronic venous insufficiency, leg swelling, and venous ulcers, as well as cosmetic concerns such as spider veins and visible varicose veins. Treatment plans often improve both health and appearance.
