Our Vein Clinic in Greenbelt, Maryland

Greenbelt, Maryland, is a suburb of Washington, D.C., in Prince George's County, Maryland. Its suburban feel, excellent diversity, easy access to the Beltway, and proximity to the nation’s capital make Greenbelt a highly sought-after region to live and work.

Less than two miles from our Greenbelt vein center is Greenbelt Park, a forested oasis offering a range of hiking trails and picnic areas. Managed by the National Park Service, the space provides 172 camping sites, allowing guests to stay within 10 miles of the Washington Monument and two miles from the University of Maryland/College Park Metro subway system.

Visualize a thrilling adventure into outer space with a trip to the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, which can also be found just two miles from our Greenbelt vein clinic. Named for rocketry pioneer and physicist Dr. Robert Hutchings Goddard, the center is NASA’s first space flight complex. Opened in 1959, its visitor center highlights the breakthroughs in aeronautics and space flight technology through seasonal and permanent exhibits.

Slow things down and take a stroll to the Roosevelt Center in Historic Greenbelt. Opened in 1937, it’s considered one of the first planned shopping centers in the entire country. About two miles from our vein clinic, the Roosevelt Center was constructed with safety and convenience in mind. Its walkways and underpasses make it a hot spot for pedestrians to avoid crossing the street during their commutes.

In addition to its range of shops, eateries, and co-ops, the Roosevelt Center is known for instilling a sense of involvement and engagement within the Greenbelt community. It includes the Greenbelt Cinema, a state-of-the-art theater that uplifts local creative projects through entertainment and education. The Greenbelt Cinema is a longtime cultural staple that boasts affordable prices and screenings of independent and blockbuster films.

More recently, three families purchased a space within the Roosevelt Center and transformed it into several virtual offices, allowing local small businesses and remote startups to revitalize and modernize the historic area.

Learn more about Greenbelt at the Greenbelt Museum, which was opened on the city’s 50th anniversary in 1987 by a group of volunteers dedicated to preserving its rich history. Tour an original home, attend quarterly lectures exploring aspects of the Great Depression and World War II eras, and immerse yourself in the living legacy that comprises Greenbelt.

Meet Dr. Byrne

Rory C. Byrne, MD, earned his medical degree with honors from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He completed his internship at Queen’s University Hospitals program in Kingston, Ontario, and a residency at McGill University Hospitals. He is certified by the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine.

Dr. Byrne first became interested in vein disease care during his work in neonatal medicine, becoming fascinated by the intricacy of tiny veins. Seeing how devastating the symptoms of venous insufficiency were for patients, he decided to dedicate his career to vein care.

“Venous disease is not easy to treat, but when treated well, the results can be remarkable and life-changing. Seeing this dramatic improvement in patients that had formerly come to me with little hope is what interests me most about vein disease and spurs me on professionally.” Rory C. Byrne

Meet Dr. Lakhanpal

Sanjiv Lakhanpal, MD, FACS, is President & CEO of Center for Vein Restoration, the largest physician-led provider for the treatment of symptomatic venous insufficiency in the United States. As a cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon, Dr. Lakhanpal witnessed first-hand the suffering and disability caused by undiagnosed or untreated chronic venous insufficiency (vein disease) and decided to do something about it. Focusing his vein treatment team’s energy on developing a vein center that specializes in diagnosing and treating venous insufficiency, he founded Center for Vein Restoration in 2007.

"The need to treat patients with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) was huge. There were so many patients who had almost crippling pain in their legs because of CVI, and they were just not being treated…We realized that this was a massively untreated disease throughout the country and the world. Research had to be done, and new technologies needed to be introduced." – Dr. Sanjiv Lakhanpal

Center for Vein Restoration has enjoyed rapid and vibrant growth and now serves patients in 23 states at more than 100 vein clinics nationwide. Under Dr. Lakhanpal's visionary leadership, CVR is charting a path forward, becoming the nationally and internationally recognized healthcare organization using cutting-edge, minimally invasive treatment options to treat venous disease in modern, comfortable outpatient vein clinics.

Our board-certified vascular surgeons offer a wide range of innovative treatment options for leg pain, swelling, cramping, itching, varicose veins, spider veins, restless leg syndrome, ulcers, and other symptoms of vascular disease.

Symptoms of vein problems

When the tiny valves in your leg veins fail to circulate blood back to the heart, it can be a sign of venous disease.

Vein disease can result in the following:

These symptoms are often the result of venous insufficiency and are unlikely to heal on their own. This common vein condition is progressive and will likely worsen without treatment.

Vein treatment options

Vein care providers at vein treatment clinics use the most advanced minimally invasive treatments available today. CVR’s modern outpatient treatment plans are far superior to the older vein-stripping methods used in the past.

Treatments include VenaSeal, a proprietary medical adhesive that safely closes off varicose veins, and ClariVein, a two-in-one approach that uses an ablation device to inject a sclerosing agent that closes the vein with a tiny rotating wire tip, which destroys the diseased vein.

At Center for Vein Restoration, we offer a wide variety of other treatment options, including:

Vein treatments take approximately an hour or less to complete, and patients can return to their normal routine immediately with few restrictions. No staples or stitches are required because a simple band-aid covers the tiny incisions. Our outpatient vein treatments require only local anesthetics. Recovery and symptom relief are fast, and there is little to no scarring.
